What is Animal Welfare?

Animal welfare, according to American Veterinary Medical Association — AVMA, can be defined as how the animal is coping with the conditions in which it lives. In essence, animal welfare is defined by the relationship between people who have animals and the duty they have to treat them humanely and responsibly.

The goal of Animal Management and Welfare is to serve Amarillo residents by providing care,  control, and resolution to situations dealing with domestic animals and wildlife.

AM&W priorities are:

  • Citizen compliance with existing laws and codes
  • Enhance enforcement of existing laws and codes
  • Seek improvements to enhance existing rules
  • Control the stray animal population
  • Increase the live release rate
